Abstract:

Contains six letters written in 1955 covering Joan Didion's travels by train from New York to Boston, Quebec, Chicago, and Sacramento and at the University of California, Berkeley. She describes her encounters with other people aboard trains, life at home in Sacramento, Calif. and being a senior at the University of California, Berkeley. Includes three other letters, from 1958 to 1960, while Joan Didion was working for Vogue Magazine in New York City and one handwritten note from 2004. Also includes one issue of Mademoiselle magazine (August, 1955) that is referenced in one of her letters as being a contributor and one black and white film negative (4.5 x 7 cm) of an unidentified infant lying on the floor.

Joan Didion, journalist and novelist, was born in 1934 in Sacramento, California. As an English major at the University of California, Berkeley, Didion won an essay contest sponsored by Vogue magazine who subsequently hired her. She worked for Vogue from 1956 to 1963.
